JOE ALIOTO JR. ENDORSES MAYOR'S PUSH TO PLACE COMMUNITY JUSTICE CENTER ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT

June 18, 2008 - District 3 Supervisorial candidate Joe Alioto, Jr. came out in strong support of Mayor Gavin Newsom's proposal for funding for the Community Justice Center, a Manhattan based court model to redirect misdemeanor offenders to social services.

"The Community Justice Center needs to be implemented here in San Francisco", said Alioto, Jr. "The Mayor's office has built a strong coalition including law enforcement and the judicial system and we cannot allow the Board of Supervisors to continue to play politics on the issue of homelessness."

The ballot measure asks voters for the authority to spend $1,770,000 in 2008-09 for, among other things, constructing two holding cells near the courtroom at 555-575 Polk Street.

"We need to find creative ways to stop the revolving door of the criminal justice system and hold people accountable for their actions", added Alioto, Jr. "This is a thoughtful plan that deserves to see the light of day".
